The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that infants be exclusively breastfed for the first six months of life. This means that no other foods or liquids, including water, should be given to the infant during this time. Breastfeeding should be done on demand, which is as often as the infant wants, day and night.
After the first six months, the WHO recommends that infants receive nutritionally adequate and safe complementary foods while continuing to breastfeed for up to two years or beyond.
Some other recommendations from the WHO include:
Starting breastfeeding within the first hour of birth
Not using bottles, teats, or pacifiers
Feeding infants in response to their cues
Avoiding foods high in sugar, salt, and trans fats
Avoiding sugar-sweetened beverages
Limiting consumption of 100% fruit juice
According to the Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP), the best way to feed infants and young children is to:
Breastfeed early
Start breastfeeding as soon as possible, and exclusively breastfeed for the first six months.
Continue breastfeeding
Continue breastfeeding for up to two years or longer, while also providing complementary foods.
Provide additional milk
If a baby isn’t breastfed, provide 1–2 cups of milk per day, in addition to 1–2 extra meals.
Avoid certain drinks
Avoid 100% juice, flavored milk, caffeinated or carbonated drinks, and stevia or sugar sweetened fruit drinks.
Avoid low fat or skimmed milk
Children under two years of age should generally avoid low fat or skimmed milk.
Introduce lumpy or granular foods
Introduce lumpy or granular foods and most tastes by about 9 to 10 months.
